Slider Revolution has been bundled with the Total theme for over a decade. When it was first included, sliders were one of the most requested features in web design, and Slider Revolution was the gold standard for building them. Times have changed, and after careful consideration, the decision was made to stop bundling it with new installations.
If you already have Slider Revolution installed, nothing changes. You will continue to receive updates via the theme panel and the plugin remains available in the full ZIP download from ThemeForest. This article explains the reasoning behind the decision and what to use instead.
Reasons Slider Revolution Is No Longer Bundled
There is no single reason for this decision, it came down to a combination of factors that together made it difficult to justify continuing to bundle the plugin.
- Recent versions require a separate license for full functionality. Newer releases of Slider Revolution have moved features behind a commercial license. Users installing the bundled version may find certain options locked or unavailable, which leads to confusion and a frustrating experience that reflects poorly on the theme.
- It is one of the most frequently exploited WordPress plugins. Slider Revolution has a long history of security vulnerabilities and requires constant updates to stay safe. Bundling a plugin that demands this level of ongoing maintenance creates unnecessary risk for users who may not update regularly.
- The plugin adds significant weight to your site. Slider Revolution loads a considerable amount of CSS and JavaScript. This impacts page speed, Core Web Vitals scores, and overall site performance; none of which are a good trade-off for a plugin that may only be used on one or two pages.
- Sliders are generally bad for UX and conversions. Research consistently shows that sliders hide content, reduce engagement, and lower conversion rates. Most visitors do not interact with slider navigation at all, meaning your most important content may never be seen. We cover this in detail in our article on why sliders aren’t always a good idea.
- It no longer reflects modern web design best practices. Sliders were a design trend of the early 2010s. Today, static hero sections, bold typography, and focused layouts consistently outperform them. Bundling Slider Revolution by default was inadvertently steering users toward a pattern that works against them.
What This Means for Existing Users
If you already have Slider Revolution installed and activated, nothing changes for you. Updates will continue to be provided via the theme panel, and the plugin will remain in the full ZIP download from ThemeForest. You can continue using it as you always have.
If you would prefer to manage the plugin independently, you can purchase your own Slider Revolution license directly from their website and install it outside of the theme bundle.
What to Use Instead
For hero sections specifically, a static layout with a strong headline and a clear call to action will almost always outperform a slider. See our article on why sliders aren’t always a good idea for more alternatives and design approaches.
If you still want a slider, the built-in Carousel Container is a great starting point for creating a simple custom carousel using theme elements such as the Image Banner. It is minimal, performant, and adds no third-party overhead.
For more complex sliders, the free Depicter plugin offers similar functionality to Slider Revolution and is worth considering as a modern alternative.
